Paksenarrion, from the cover of Sheepfarmer's Daughter

Paksenarrion Dorthansdotter is the daughter of a sheep farmer who ran away from home and joined Duke Phelan's mercenary company, serving for three years in Aarenis. During these years, but especially in the next few years, she was tied up in a string of events culminating with her becoming her world's greatest paladin and finding the long-lost heir of Lyonya.

She chooses to go by the short form Paks, which is similar to the nickname given by her father, Pakse.[1]

Physical appearance Edit

Though specifics are few, Paks is tall and slender, said to be as tall as her father. Her hair is long and blonde and often kept in a tight braid.[1]

Personality Edit

Unlike many women, Paks is not one to sit at home and keep house, perhaps leading to her choice to not marry the pig farmer; she enjoys hunting and wrestling. Love and intimate relationships are not a priority either.[1]

Early yearsEdit

Paks grew up on her father's farm in northwestern Tsaia, a half-day's sheep drive from the village of Three Firs[2]. As Paks leaves home first thing in the first book, we have little information about her family, her father Dorthan Kanasson (son of Kanas Jorisson[3]), her mother Rahel and her one year older brother Sedlin[1] are the only close family we know by name, and Paks also had at least two younger brothers, two younger sisters and one older brother in addition to Sedlin[4][5].

Paksenarrion seems to have lived a sheltered life, rarely experiencing any contact with the outside world[2], in fact, before running away she had never been any further away from home than Three Firs[1]. The idea of joining a mercenary company came from her cousin Jornoth, who several years earlier left and joined a mercenary company, eventually working himself up to a position in some unspecified guard company[2]. Not content with her father's plans of wedding her off to pig farmer Fersin Amboisson, Paks waited until the end of the recruiting season the year she turned eighteen[1], and clad in her brother's clothes and equipped with nothing more than a dagger and 18 copper pieces left home, joining Duke Phelan's company, who at that moment were recruiting in Rocky Ford.
